When my wings were broken
When I was young, and I returned from my university in the United States, I came back with different ideas since Cyprus at that time was not that advanced as the United States. I was experimenting to find something to do so I was asking relatives and friends if they have a job to offer me but nobody had anything . The only person I could turn to was my father. I tried to work with him at his small shop selling spare parts for cars but the truth is I never belong there. I was dreaming doing a job by my own and succeed with something different which is new in my country. The biggest problem I had is that on one hand I didn’t have the initial capital to start anything and on the other hand I didn’t want to ask money from my father without his approval of what I was going to do.
So I started saving money little by little and ask a friend to prepare a feasibility study for a Car Wash that I saw in the United States. The big difference of that car wash from the Car Wash’s that we had in Cyprus at that time is that it wouldn’t scratch the paint of the car. The feasibility study came out and it showed a big success.
The following Monday morning I was so excited but nervous at the same time and went to my father to introduce my idea.
I explained the concept and showed the feasibility study . I Analysed the financial needs and asked for the amount I needed to get started. Note that amount for my father at the certain time it wasn’t a big deal. I didn’t get even get the chance to finish talking to him and he looked at me and simply said “a Car Wash ? that’s not a job for you”and through the study back to me on the desk . That broke really my heart since I made so many dreams about that idea.
About six months later, someone else took the same idea and realised it and today he’s a successful entrepreneur. Every time I think about it hurts me and remembering that Monday morning.
